Thomas E. Carey papers, 1901-1938.

Thomas E. Carey was chairman of Montana Railroad / Public Service Commission and later State Treasurer. Collection consists of letters (1932) congratulating him on his election as Railroad Commissioner, additional correspondence (1908-1938), a brand registration, minutes (1905) of a meeting of Forest Reserve Committee in Philipsburg, decorative postcards, poems, membership cards, etc. Collection consists of letters (1932) congratulating him on his election as Railroad Commissioner; additional correspondence (1908-1938), including two letters from friends alleging that the prosecuting attorney in the case against him had framed him; a brand registration (1901), minutes (1905) of a meeting of Forest Reserve Committee in Philipsburg, decorative postcards (1907-1912), poems, membership cards, etc.

The Montana Board of Railroad Commissioners was established by the Montana legislature in 1907. In 1913 the Board of Railroad Commissioners was made ex officio the newly created Montana Public Service Commission. As such, it was given the authority to regulate a variety of public utilities.
